Donald Trump stabs American troops in the back as his “big, beautiful bill” imposes brutal work requirements on veterans receiving food stamps. They gave their minds and bodies for this country, they bled, they broke bones, they lost sleep, families, and pieces of themselves that they will never get back, and now Trump wants to work them like dogs, as if their sacrifices were not enough, as if serving their country was somehow not worthy of basic human respect.

Under Trump’s big, ugly bill — which has already cemented itself as one of the worst pieces of legislation in American history — veterans will no longer be exempt from work requirements under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) starting in 2026. This means that the same people who carried the weight of war, who stood in harm’s way so others didn’t have to, will now have to jump through degrading hoops just to put food on their tables.

Veterans, along with countless other Americans, will now have to provide proof that they are working, volunteering, training for a job, or job hunting for a minimum of 80 hours a month to keep food stamps, unless they meet rare exemptions like certain disabilities. Let’s be honest — these “exceptions” are crumbs thrown to make the cruelty look softer than it is. These new rules are designed by Republicans to gut food stamps so that even more wealth can be funneled to the super-rich. People will go hungry so that billionaires can afford another yacht, another vacation home, another luxury that will never be shared with the public they step on to get it.

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities reports that roughly 1.2 million veterans are currently living in households that rely on SNAP for a portion of their food. Let that number sink in — more than a million men and women who have worn the uniform, who have followed orders, who have seen and done things in service to their country that most civilians could never imagine, are living with food insecurity. And now, under Trump’s rules, these families could be scrambling to find jobs that do not exist, in economies that are already stretched thin, just to keep food in their bellies.

Many veterans struggle to find and keep jobs due to severe mental and physical trauma incurred during their service. PTSD, depression, chronic pain, loss of limbs — these are not abstract “issues,” they are daily battles that veterans fight long after they come home. Many don’t have college degrees or work experience outside of the military because they enlisted young, choosing service over school, trusting that their country would take care of them later.

Listen to Army veteran Darryl Chavis, who told Stateline, “What I’m trying to do is get settled into, you know, stabilize into an apartment. I have the credentials to get a job. So it’s not like I’m not gonna look for a job. I have to work. I’m in transition, and the obstacles don’t make it easy.” That is the voice of someone who wants to work, who is willing to work, but who is being set up to fail by a system that prioritizes punishing the vulnerable over supporting them. And then Chavis adds something that cuts even deeper: “Nobody even came to help me.” This is a man with PTSD, someone who risked everything for his country, and the response he gets is silence.

As tragic as this betrayal is, it’s unfortunately not surprising coming from a draft-dodging oligarch like Donald Trump. Patriotism is not in his vocabulary unless it can be turned into a profit. Personal sacrifice means nothing to him unless it’s someone else’s, and the greater good is a phrase he only knows if it can be tied to his own financial gain. To him, veterans are props, something to stand beside him for a photo op, not people whose struggles demand action and compassion.

History will remember this as yet another moment when those who risked everything for their country were abandoned, not by enemies overseas, but by the very leader who claimed to love them most. And no matter how much spin or distraction is thrown at it, the truth will remain — when veterans needed help, Donald Trump gave them paperwork, conditions, and roadblocks, because feeding the hungry was never the priority.
